ENGLISH SPEAKING COUNTRIES Annotation: This paper
provides basic information about using
of English language in English speaking countries. English has achieved prime
status by becoming the most widely spoken language in the world – if one
disregards proficiency – ahead of Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. English is
spoken in 101 countries, while Arabic is spoken in 60, French in 51, Chinese in
33, and Spanish in 31. From one small island, English has gone on to acquire
lingua franca status in international business, worldwide diplomacy, and
science. Great
Britain, USA, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are English-speaking
countries. They are situated in different parts of the world and distinguish in
many ways. Their nature, weather and climate, and the way of life of their
people differ from each other. Each country has its own peculiar
history and customs, traditions and national holidays. Nevertheless, they all
have a common language. English is the language of the people who left England
to make their own names in new countries. [7]].

British
English refers to the dialect of English spoken and written in the United
Kingdom. UK English is the preferred language in most European countries, as
well as in English-speaking countries in Africa and South Asia. Nevertheless,
regional accents and dialects vary greatly even within the United Kingdom – for
example, an Irishman sounds very different from someone from the North of
England. For many of us, when we think of British English, we think of ‘the
Queen’s English’. The Queen’s accent is known as ‘received pronunciation’ and
is actually used by only 10% of the population.
