Higher education is considered the last step in formal education. It follows the achievement of a high school diploma and generally involves the completion of a degree. Most recognized definitions explain higher education within the confines of a college or university that awards degrees, and in some cases, certifications.
Questions over the efficacy of a college degree continue to challenge the higher education community. Is it really worth it? There are a lot of opinions on this subject. Let’s try to figure it out.
Firstly, it`s important to mention that a college degree is expensive. And the cost of higher education increases every year. In the same time the number of budget places in State universities is not enough. Therefore, most of the students have to pay. Many countries will give opportunities for students to get loans, but the cost of studying will still be high. There’s really no way around that fact. If we cut away the population of students who are going full-ride, we still have a substantial number of degree-seekers who will come out of college with insurmountable debt. It’s a terrifying fact that many use as reasoning not to pursue a degree.
Moreover, if we’re talking about Russia, several of the problems that have afflicted Russian higher education have existed throughout the entire post-Soviet period of «modernization». Take for example outdated school and university programs. Many programs are already obsolete by the time the Ministry of Education gets round to approving them. This is partly down to the poor quality of the programs themselves, and partly down to the bureaucratic barriers that stand in the way of the introduction of the most advanced education technologies.
Either, many experts talk about the problem of lack of practice in the learning process. In our opinion, the problem itself does not lie in theory. Theory teaches you through the experience of others. Theoretical knowledge can give students a deeper understanding of a concept through seeing it in the context of a greater whole and understanding everything behind it.
However we cannot deny the fact that education has an undue focus on theory with little connection to the problems and challenges faced by the world. The market is changing. The 21st century is witnessing technological changes at a pace faster than any other decade or generation.
