Introduction

English is a West Germanic language of the Indo-European language family, originally spoken by the inhabitants of early medieval England. Modern English has spread around the world since the 17th century as a consequence of the worldwide influence of the British Empire and the United States. Through all types of printed and electronic media of these countries, English has become the leading language of international discourse and the lingua franca in many regions and professional contexts such as science, navigation and law. English is the most spoken language in the world (if Chinese is divided into variants) and the third-most spoken native language in the world, after Standard Chinese and Spanish. It is the most widely learned second language and is either the official language or one of the official languages in almost 60 sovereign states and several international organizations. There are more people who have learned English as a second language than there are native speakers.

This broad geography of English resulted in creation of whole variety of different dialects. The phonetical, phonological, semantical characteristics and even grammatical structures of these dialects may differ greatly. Therefore, it’s possible to claim that each forms of English spoken in different countries has its own peculiarities. In fact, varieties of English spoken within regions of one single country can have their own characteristics. The difference between dialects does not typically prevent understanding by speakers of other dialects and accents, although mutual unintelligibility can occur at extreme ends of the dialect continuum.

According to many researches, the issue that constitutes the main difference between different dialects is lexicology. Despite being dialects of the same language different varieties of English may use different words for the same objects or same words may have different meanings in different dialects.

This paper aims to describe American, Canadian, Australian and Indian verities of English and point separate features of those dialects through extensive analysis of their lexical vocabulary.
