INTRODUCTION

One of the distinctive features of the modern English language is a system of non-finite verb forms. Non-finite verb forms are represented by four forms: the Infinitive, the Gerund, the Participle I, the Participle II. The participle is non-finite verb form that combines features of the verb, features of the adjective, features of the adverb.

This research is devoted to a detailed analysis of all the features of the use of the

participles which are a means of constructing complex sentences and which play an important role in the grammar of the English language because the English participle can act as other parts of speech.

The relevance of the paper is determined by the difficulty of identifying the participles and their functions in the text, and also difficulty of distinguish the Participle I from the Gerund.

The object of the coursework is the Participle I and the Participle II in English.

The subject of this research is the various features of use, functions and characteristics of the Participles in the book by Ernest Hemingway “The Snows of Kilimanjaro”.

The objective of this course work is to determine and study all the features of the participles, their functions, characteristics, features and be able to distinguish the participles from other parts of speech using the example of the book.

The set goal determines the solution of a number of the following tasks:

 Expand the concepts of the participles in English language;

 Study and describe the Participle I and the Participle II;

 Learn to distinguish the participles from other parts of speech;

 Identify and study the main role, functions, categories of verb, characteristics and features of the use of the participles;

 Analyze the features of the use of the participles in the form of diagrams;

 Summarize the results of the course work.

Thus, in its structure, this research consists of an introduction, first chapter, second chapter, conclusion, list of references and electronic sources.

The introduction substantiates the relevance of the research, describes the object, subject, goals, tasks of the coursework. The first chapter includes theoretical material that discusses the features of the use of the participles, their functions, features and characteristics. The second chapter is a practical part of the work, which is based on the analysis in the book by Ernest Hemingway “The Snows of Kilimanjaro”. In conclusion, the results of the paper done are summarized and conclusions are formulated.

CHAPTER 1. THEORETICAL STUDY OF THE BASIC CONCEPTS OF THE PARTICIPLE I AND THE PARTICIPLE II

The participle in the English language is non-finite verb form, in its categorical meaning are combined features of the verb, features of the adjective, features of the adverb.

In the English language there are two participles – the Present Participle or in other words the Participle I, which is formed with the suffix –ing, and the Past Participle or in other words the Participle II which is formed with the suffix –ed/v3.

The Participle I and the Participle II have nominal features – adjective features allowing them to act in the sentence in the syntactic functions of the attribute. Also, the Participle I and the Participle II have the adverbial features occurring in the use of the participles in the syntactic function of the adverbial modifier.

The Present Participle Active is formed by adding the suffix –ing to the verb, for example:

a) To read – reading;

b) To swim – swimming;

c) To study – studying;

d) To sit – sitting;

e) To play – playing;

f) To stand – standing.

The Past Participle Active and Passive are formed by adding the suffix –ed to the verb or use of V3, for example:

a) To call – called;

b) To dance – danced;

c) To ask – asked;

d) To buy – bought;

e) To write – written;

f) To show – shown.

The Perfect Participle Active is formed with the auxiliary verb to have and the semantic verb having +V3/ed in the form of the Past Participle, for example:

a) Having done;

b) Having written;

c) Having bought;

d) Having asked;

e) Having smiled;

f) Having watched.
