Studying the features of the verbalization of literary images is directly correlated with stylistics. The author’s style of the writer serves as a reflection of his creative potential, it manifests itself both in the style of the work of art generated by him, and in the selection and unique organization of various language means along with stylistic devices, and in the characteristic way of presenting textual material. Idiostyle has the key feature which is the application of different stylistic means and expressive language devices, which add richness, depth and expressiveness to the works. It is in the context of the author’s style that one can draw reasonable conclusions about the formation of the image of a character from a literary work.

Analysis of the stylistic features to form the image of a literary character allows to evaluate the features of the author’s style. It also implies the creation of the expressive potential of the language as a whole. The image of the protagonist of a literary text, as a rule, is created by the writer with the greatest attention, since it is his development and actions that the reader most closely follows. Often it is through the protagonist that the writer conveys his author’s intention. The image of the protagonist is created both through descriptive constructions within the framework of the narrative.

Literary character is created through a variety of stylistic devices that are subject for linguistic research. They are designed to describe both his appearance and his character, behavior, actions and reactions to the events taking place in the plot.

The relevance of this research is that it focuses on the stylistic features of creating the image of a literary character. In addition, this research plays an important role from the point of view of literary criticism, since it allows for the features of the literary style. This problem covers a complex of tasks related to linguistics, stylistics and lexicography, since the formation of the image of a literary character is correlated both with the author’s style and the language expressive potential.

The object of the research is the image of the protagonist of a literary text.

The subject of the research is the stylistic features of the verbalization of the image of the protagonist of a literary text.

The objective of the research is to analyze the linguistic and stylistic features of the verbalization of the image of the protagonist of a literary text.

The set objective implies the solution of the following tasks:

1. Describe the features of the literary style;

2. Consider the concepts of «image» and «imagery» in the context of linguistic research;

3. Describe stylistic devices in the context of linguistic research;

4. Designate the role of stylistic devices in the formation of the author’s intention;

5. Describe the features of the author’s style of R. Bradbury;

6. Analyze lexical and syntactic stylistic devices for forming the image of the protagonist in R. Bradbury’s novel «Fahrenheit 451»;

7. Describe the potential for implementing research results.

The source of the research is the novel by R. Bradbury «Fahrenheit 451».

The research methodology includes the following methods:

1. Research literature analysis on the issues of the diploma;

2. The method of sampling when creating the set of examples of stylistic devices describing the features of the protagonist;

3. Classification method in the formation of the corpus of examples, taking into account the use of stylistic devices;

4. Descriptive method in identifying the features of using stylistic devices to form the image of the protagonist in the source text;

5. Quantitative analysis in determining the most productive stylistic devices for forming the image of the protagonist in the source.

The theoretical basis of the research includes the works of the following scientists: N. F. Alefirenko, E. B. Borisova, I. R. Galperin, A. T. Gryaznova, I.N. Isakova, L.G. Kaida, M.N. Kozhina, V.A. Maslova, R.P. Musat, E.O. Oparina, N.V. Patroeva, O.V. Tomberg, V.E. Chernyavskaya, E.A. Yurina, Y.V. Yuseva, P. Ivenz, G. Leech, P. Reynolds and others.

The theoretical significance implies its reflection of current linguistic approaches to studying author’s style. The research is the analysis of the stylistic features of the author’s style of R. Bradbury that are used in forming the litwrary images. The research made also specifies the stylistic features and expressive potential of English that is reflected in the lexemes and constructions applied by the writer.

The practical significance of the research implies that its results are used In studying English linguistics, mainly stylistics and lexicology. The results may also be applied for studying the author’s style of R. Bradbury as well as the most relevant stylistic devices.

The structure of the research consists of introduction, three chapters, conclusion and list of references.

The first chapter of this research includes the study of theoretical problems of the work: literary style, literary image, stylistic devices, linguistic expressiveness, the features of verbalization of the author’s style.

The second chapter of the research is a practical study of the features of applying stylistic devices to form the image of the protagonist in R. Bradbury’s novel “Fahrenheit 451.”

The third chapter of the research reflects the potential for practical application of the results of the diploma in various branches of the humanities.

So sum up, the specific features of the literary style are very diverse. The most important of them can be called the formation of special literary images and metaphors, which are created using various linguistic means of expression. The literary style is implemented in literary texts to create a special atmosphere, to allow the writer to achieve his goals in creating the special fiction space, the relevant characters, etc. There exists the inseparable connection of such concepts as “image” and “imagery.” The main distinguishing features of the literary image are its generalization, a high degree of expression and individuality. In turn, the notion of “imagery” is characterized by expression and picturesqueness in terms of literature studies and linguistics.

A harmoniously created literary character has many features characteristic of ordinary people, but they are presented, as a rule, in an exaggerated form. Due to this feature, it is easier for the writer to convey his ideas to readers. To create a holistic image of a literary character within the boundaries of the author’s intentions of the writer, it is necessary to take into account all possible features of the character – appearance, behavior, attitudes, etc.

The author’s style is a relatively recently formed term within the framework of literary criticism and stylistics. It reflects the stylistic and expressive features of the writer’s speech, emphasizes his individuality in terms of expression. The author’s style is a set of linguistic and stylistic devices that are used to express the aesthetic nature of the text, to achieve the author’s intention of the writer. Through the author’s style, the reader is conveyed an individual author’s picture of the world, taking into account the characteristics of the era and the broader context of writing a literary text.

Within the practical research made, quantitative analysis showed that when forming the image of the main character of the analyzed source, stylistic devices of the lexical level are most often encountered. They significantly increase the expressiveness and emotionality of the text, describing the appearance of the character and the features of his inner world. In turn, syntactic stylistic devices – although less common in the text – also reflect the features of the image of the protagonist. They describe his behavior, actions, reactions to what is happening, as well as those actions that the protagonist of the novel is forced or wants to do.

Quantitative analysis shows that metaphor was used most often when forming the protagonist’s image. It played the most important role in making the inner world of the character, his emotions, reactions and state in general. The expressive nature of metaphor is that it full of associative connotations, relevant for literary genre as a whole.

Next, similes should be highlighted. Comparative constructions make the narrative in general and the image of the protagonist in particular more intense and visual for readers. The main character becomes more understandable to the reader largely due to similes, as his image becomes more vivid and complete.

Due to epithets, both the appearance of Guy Montag and his emotional state are described. It is important to emphasize the expressive and emotional-evaluative nature of the identified epithets, which makes the text more vivid and visual for readers. Due to parallel constructions, the actions of the character are described, or his reactions to the events of the novel taking place in the plot.

The role of antithesis should be stressed as well. This stylistic device, based on opposition, was used to describe the inner world of the literary characters. Using the stylistic device, the emotions of the protagonist, his feelings regarding current events are conveyed.

The role of polysyndeton and asyndeton in shaping the image of the protagonist is crucial as well. Their application made it possible to convey the dynamism of the described situation, Montag’s emotional reactions to what is happening, which significantly brings the described events closer to the everyday life of people.

The analysis of the practical relevance of the research has proven the broad potential for its implementation potential in humanities.

The results obtained during the research can be applied in stylistics. The formation of the image of the protagonist in the novel “Fahrenheit 451” is impossible without the use of stylistic devices. At the same time, their use is generally characteristic of the literary style, as they increase the expressiveness and emotiveness of the narration. The conducted analysis proved the paramount importance of stylistic means in creating literary images.

The results obtained correlate with the actual problems of literary criticism. To date, there are many approaches to considering the phenomenon of the author’s style of the writer, and attention to this scientific problem is extremely important. In particular, the analysis proved that for writers it is crucial to describe the inner world, experiences, emotions, as well as reactions to ongoing events of the literary character. Due to these descriptions, the image of a literary character becomes complete and rich, features appear in it that bring it closer to real people. The identified features of Bradbury’s author’s style also include the use of a significant number of lexical stylistic devices that make the image of the main character more complete and vivid, for example, metaphors, similes, epithets.

The results obtained are also valuable in the context of linguistics. Moreover, the formation of the protagonist’s image largely depends on the style, but the lexical potential of the language in its entirety also plays an important role. So, antithesis, gradation, repetitions, epithets are directly related to the lexical system of the language: we are talking about either antonyms and synonyms, or words that are expressive in their meaning.

CHAPTER 1. LINGUISTIC AND STYLISTIC MEANS OF CREATING LITERARY CHARACTERS

1.1 Literary Style in Linguistics

Literary style occupies a special place among language styles. Its history, features and linguistic characteristics significantly distinguish it from other styles of the national language and make it specific. It is the literary style that has always has had and continues to have a significant impact on literature and through it society as a whole [40]. Such an impact is due to the fact that, being realized primarily in literary works, the literary style is directly involved in the formation of the literary language and literary norm [77].

In linguistics, there are several terms to refer to this phenomenon: literary style, style of literary speech, style of fiction, literary and fiction style [65]. Still, each researcher uses his own notion, for example: V. V. Vinogradov prefers to talk about the “style of fiction” [cit.: 45]. I. R. Galperin in his works studies the “literary style” [14].

According to I. R. Galperin, literary style should be understood as a functional style that is used in literary texts and thus having the specific expressive features [14, p. 72].

The literary style functions primarily in the process of literary creativity, i.e. it accompanies the entire process of creation by the author (selection and development of the plot, creation of character images). It is this style that is realized in the works of fiction. V. V. Vinogradov states that the notion of style implies the presence of specific linguistic features in spite of the particular context [11].

M. N. Kozhina specifies the features of the literary style, making accent on the presence of a large number of tropes, emotionality and the presence of the author’s position in the texts [28].

Literary style performs a number of functions. As L. A. Guseva states, literary style performs a certain function – aesthetic one, and various means of speech expressiveness are used to implement this function [21].

According to I. R. Galperin, literary style implies the expression of special images close to the ordinary people and these have a great amount of expressiveness component [14].

According to R. P. Musat, the literary style functions in a special sphere of human activity – literature, therefore, on an equal footing with the aesthetic one, the following are distinguished among the main functions of this style [40]:

1. Informative function (the function is implemented in literary works when readers receive knowledge or information about something);

2. Communicative function (with the help of a literary text, the author interacts with readers, expresses his opinion, tries to convey to readers the main idea of the text);

3. Influencing function (the author seeks to get a response from the reader, to influence him).

Among the main characteristics of the literary style are the originality of writing and the novelty of the images created by the authors, which can be classified according to various parameters. Images associated with symbols are singled out in a separate category, since they have a special expression and are created using text metaphorization [76].

The literary style is able to absorb the features of other language styles. So, V. V. Vinogradov identifies a number of features inherent in literary and colloquial styles [11]. The researcher notes that although literary speech is realized in writing, in some respects it is close to oral colloquial speech. A high degree of emotionality, the presence of different shades of modality in language units and the use of extraliterary means also bring these two language styles closer. The latter is represented by the use of dialect lexemes, vulgarisms and slangs both in the literary and colloquial styles [11].

However, it is often the selection of lexical units and the specifics of their functioning that distinguish the literary style from other styles of the language. As O. A. Krylova claims, in a literary text, means of literary expression are widely used to create images, as well as contextual (the context is represented by a part of the text that is complete in meaning, which helps to clarify the meaning of each word) vocabulary, which is made up of stylistically different words [32; 44; 74].

According to E. O. Oparina, the lexical characteristics of the literary style are represented by literary and colloquial vocabulary, as well as historicisms, archaisms, jargon, neologisms and scientific vocabulary. All the known linguistic and stylistic means also find application in the literary style [42].

R. B. Matenov highlights the main features of literary style, which form its specificity. Thus, the literary style is characterized by a heterogeneous composition of language means, the use of all the stylistic resources of the language, including the means of literary expression and synonymy. In literary texts, stylization is used, which gives the text a stylistic coloring, actualization of the internal form of words. Any word can be transformed with the help of text increments and changing its meaning, it can also acquire a symbolic semantics and connotations. One of the important features of the literary style is polyphony, i.e. in the texts of this style there is a clear distinction between the character’s and author’s speech [38].

According to L. G. Kaida, for works of literary style, an important feature is the specificity of perception of the images created by the authors: they are perceived by readers with the help of feelings, while readers recreate the author’s reality. The world of a work of art is a rethought and newly created world that exists in the head of the author. Thus, readers may see not only the author’s “fantasies”, but also his emotions, preferences, etc. [25].

Thus, the specific features of the literary style are very diverse. The most important of them can be called the formation of special literary images and metaphors, which are created using various linguistic means of expression. The literary style is implemented in literary texts to create a special atmosphere, to allow the writer to achieve his goals in creating the special fiction space, the relevant characters, etc.
