The role of English in the modern world is huge. That is why the exam in the English language will become mandatory, and the ninth-graders will have to write a single test. OGE in the English language remains in force, which the ninth-graders voluntarily choose to take. Students and their parents, as well as teachers with school administrators, are concerned about exam preparation. This problem created the basis for a detailed study of one of the sections of the exam — word formation.
In task No. 2 of the Unified State Exam and the Unified State Exam in English in the Grammar and Vocabulary section, the control object is the ability to use word-formation affixes of the English language. The type of task is a short answer, for which you need to fill in the gaps in the text with words that are lexically and grammatically consistent with the context, transforming with the help of word-building elements the words presented in the fields to the right of the gaps.
To complete these tasks, the student must have a rich vocabulary, master the affixation methods of word formation and, accordingly, know the suffixes and prefixes of various parts of speech. Practice shows that students experience great difficulties in their application.
Having studied the current textbooks “Forward” and “Round up”, we can conclude that they do not have a list of the main suffixes and prefixes that participate in the formation of new words; there is no theoretical material on word formation. In the textbooks there are not enough exercises for training in the formation of new words, there is no system of work. Therefore, a more detailed development of exercises on the topic «Word-formation in English» is in demand and relevant today.
The analysis of English textbooks, the requirements of the state standard and educational programs allowed us to highlight a number of contradictions:
Between the objective need to study this topic in preparation for the exam and the exam and the lack of a system of developed exercises that form word formation skills in school textbooks;
between the requirements of the English language program for the level of proficiency of the lexical side of speech by students in the amount of at least 1600 lexical units and the low level of their vocabulary in reality.
Taking into account these contradictions, the goal of the research work is defined and formulated: systematization of theoretical and practical training material on English word formation.
In order to achieve this goal, we have set the following tasks:
Compile a list of affixes with examples, translation and classify them by meaning and parts of speech;
Compose your own word-building dictionary containing the main derivative words;
To research Internet resources for availability of word-formation tests on-line and compile a “piggy bank” of useful sites;
Develop your own system of interactive exercises aimed at the formation of word-building skills.
Object of study — word formation methods in English.
The subject of the study is the system of word-building exercises as an integral part of the exam preparation process.
The theoretical significance of the study lies in the fact that based on the analysis of theoretical and methodological literature, a systematization of word formation material is made, a complete list of affixes with examples, translation and classification according to the meaning and parts of speech is compiled.
The practical significance of the study is determined by the fact that the developed exercise systems, word-formation dictionary and the “piggy bank” of useful sites will help to improve the quality of preparation for exams in the English language.

Language is a reflection of human life. Modern society is in constant development: the rapid progress of science and technology, discoveries in the field of medicine. An important difference of the twenty-first century is the dense rooting of the Internet. All changes that occur are recorded in the language, the vocabulary of which is daily replenished with new lexical units. Every year, the vocabulary of the English language is replenished by an average of 800 lexical units.
One of the most authoritative and reliable sources is the Great Oxford Dictionary. Annually on-line supplements are published on the website containing new lexical units. Word formation is one of the ways to replenish the vocabulary of the English language.
Affixation is defined by linguists as one of the most productive ways of forming new lexical units by adding word-building affixes to various foundations. It should also indicate the concept of productivity, which is defined by the term «word-building activity», which implies the ability of word-formation tools to form new lexical units.
Affixation is a productive way to replenish the vocabulary of the English language at the present stage of its development. Speaking about special cases of the affix word formation method, namely, suffix and prefix, based on the data, we can conclude that both of these methods are productive.
It seems that the use of affixes as a learning topic will be extremely useful for students in the lexicology of the English language. Students can be offered a variety of search tasks, tasks aimed at studying the affix word formation method. Based on the data obtained, we have developed some tasks that can be used to study affixation.

1. THEORETICAL FOUNDATIONS OF THE RESEARCH OF AFFIXATION IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE
1. Affixation as a Productive Word-Formation Pattern in English

This paragraph is devoted to the consideration of productive suffixes in the English language. The most popular affixes and their role in word formation are highlighted. The vocabulary of the modern English language is replenished due to the formation of new words through word-formation processes.
Affixation is defined as a way of forming new words by adding word-building affixes to various bases. In accordance with such a division of derivational affixes into suffixes and prefixes, affixation is divided into suffix and prefix, which are significantly different.
One way to form a derivative word is affixation.
The formation of a derivative word through affixation is a complex and ambiguous process. There are several views on the mechanism of formation of the lexical meaning of a derived word, which is considered by V.V. Vinogradov, E. S. Kubryakova, L. N. Murzin, L. V. Sakharny. Semantic research properties of the sources of motivation of derivative words makes it possible to see the ambiguity of their definition. The semantic analysis of the derivative word allows you to compare it with the semantics of the motivating word, that is, with the semantics of the generating base. Our study is based on the analysis of borrowed Latin suffixes in English in the system of verbs, nominal categories. Borrowed vocabulary as a linguistic and culturological phenomenon is of undoubted interest. The fact of borrowing a token from one language to another is a complex and multifaceted. The borrowing of words was touched upon in the writings of E.A. Zemskaya (1973, 1992), L.P. Krysina (1972, 1975), E.S. Kubryakova (1970, 1978), V.N. Nemchenko (1994), M.V. Panova (1975, 1991), I.S. Ulukhanov (1974, 1992), I.A. Shirshova (1999, 2003, 2004, 2005), N.A. Yanko-Trinitskaya (1968,2001) and other researchers.
It is known that in Western Europe of the Middle Ages, the Latin language was a language science and church. It was used when writing scientific works up to 18 century. Some universities in Western Europe and the 20th century have a tradition to resort in solemn cases to the Latin language, which was considered a sign learning. Therefore, we can conclude that Latin words are wide flow into the languages of Western Europe. Latin for many centuries served the languages of Western Europe to update their vocabulary. In English Latin is richly represented. The largest range of borrowing from Latin, phonetic and lexical Latinisms, as well as the Latinization of the phonetic form of words folk traditions adopted in the Renaissance.
Latin continued to be an important cultural phenomenon of modern of the world. Without this seemingly “dead tongue,” it’s impossible to imagine many areas of human activity. If you look carefully, it turns out that the scope of Latin is very wide and is very diverse. This study analyzes borrowed Latin affixes in English.
The affix, as well as the formant or formative, is a morpheme that joins the root and serves to form words. Affixes can be derivational, such as, for example, -ness, pre- and inflectional, such as –s, –ed. In fact, affix is a related morpheme that does not coincide with the stem in at least one word form of an unofficial word, for example, kindness, unlikely. As you know, prefixes and suffixes can be separable affixes. Perhaps no way of forming words has been studied as often and in detail as affixation. Affix word formation has always been and continues to be of interest to domestic and Western linguists. Although there are a large number of studies, it cannot be said that affixation problems have found their solution. Mainly refers to the fundamental issues of affixation: determining the derivational status of the affixes morpheme and the semantics of derivational affix. The description of the affixes subsystem of any language involves the establishment of the inventory and boundaries of affixation, as well as the semantic load that this or that affix, and with which its place in this subsystem is associated.
The function of the affix is to update the potency of values that belongs to the basics. In affixing, new words are formed from morphemes by adding affixes to them. The root morpheme, combining with the affix one, is regulated by certain word-formation models. And, as you know, the word-building model has a generic type value. In turn, the derivational model is characterized by one or another degree of productivity.
The basic unit of word formation is a derivative word. Adding a grammar affix is not affects the lexical meaning of the base. Within one morphological paradigm, the lexical identity of the root is preserved; the grammatical meanings of the forms vary. This type of affixation is called additive. “With this type of connection, the meaning of the word’s form is made up of the meaning of its stem and affix,” The new word is formed not as a result of adding affix to a generating basis, but as the result of adding some structured transformation of one name form to another, more compact, synonymous her name form (word). The core of the word-formation paradigm is the basis of the motivating word. It is a paradigm to combine monobasic derivatives of the same word-formation tact, but of different word-formation meaning. It begins with the foundation of a motivating word, and the foundation chooses those affixes that are not contraindicated to it structurally, grammatically and semantically.
In order to obtain a new name for some initial element, which in the future affixation name will become an “identifying” component, a new element is added — the differentiating * component of the future affixation denomination, which clarifies the meaning of the new denomination in
