Введение:

Jane Austen’s «Emma» became a kind of challenge to a conservative society, the product of which, albeit in an unexpected way, she was. Having become one of the clearest examples of the feminist movement in literature and marking the flowering of a new genre as a manifestation of women’s confident self-identification, «Emma» raised many problems of women who were previously presented as everyday duties and moral duty.

The relevance of this study is explained by the need to consider the phenomenon of feminism in «Emma» through the prism of postcolonialism as a characteristic of literature and time.

The object of this study is the work «Emma» by Jane Austen and its film adaptation.

The subject of this study is feminism in the literary and film version of Jane Austen’s Emma.

The purpose of this study is to identify the features of feminism in the original and adaptation of the work, as well as their consideration in the context of postcolonialism.

To achieve this goal, we need to perform the following tasks:

1) briefly consider the general characteristics of postcolonialism;

2) consider Jane Austen’s feminist views;

3) consider the role of «Emma» in the context of feminism;

4) consider the portrait of the heroine of «Emma»;

5) study the problem of women’s autonomy raised in «Emma»;

6) consider the feminist challenge in the film adaptation of «Emma».

The theoretical significance of the research lies in the compilation and analysis of theoretical material, as well as its supplement concerning the film adaptation of the work, which simplifies subsequent study in the context of the subject.

The practical significance of the study lies in the fact that the results of the study can be used in the study of postcolonial literature, as well as in the context of feminist studies too.

The main research methods include generalization, analysis.

The theoretical basis of the research is presented in the form of studies on postcolonial literature and feminism, as well as by critical reviews for the film adaptation.

The structure of the work is determined by the purpose and objectives of the study: this work consists of an introduction, two chapters, conclusions by chapters, conclusion, a list of references.

The introduction briefly explains the factors of choosing a topic, consistently provides relevance, object, subject, goals and objectives, theoretical and practical significance, methods and structure.

In the first chapter, the theoretical component of the topic is given: the general characteristics of postcolonial literature are considered, the feminist views of Jane Austen are studied, the role of «Emma» is studied in the context of general feminist sentiments.

In the second chapter, a transition is made to certain specific nuances of the subject: the portrait of the heroine of «Emma» is considered, the problem of women’s autonomy in literature is studied, and the specifics of the feminist challenge in the film adaptation are described.

Conclusions by chapters consistently list the main theoretical and practical conclusions.

In conclusion, the results of the conducted research are briefly listed, on the basis of which a conclusion is formed about the success of achieving the set goals and objectives.

CHAPTER 1. POSTCOLONIAL LITERATURE AND ITS PLACE IN FEMINISM

1.1. General characteristics of postcolonal literature

In this section we will briefly consider the main features of postcolonial literature in order to form a general idea about it. Thus, the name itself has caused a large number of discussions on the topic of historical prerequisites and principles that define postcolonial literature.

So, for example, it is not quite clear whether the term should be perceived specifically or it means a certain period. The name can either refer to the period of India’s declaration of independence, or to the colonization policy of Great Britain as a whole.

Many researchers believe that the term «postcolonial» refers us to the need to discuss the influence, including violent, of the colonizing countries on former colonies, suggesting the positioning of politics from the point of view of a more perfect one, leveling the consequences of abuse and inequality [15].

L. Krisman clarifies the term, paying attention to the definition of discourse and postcolonial theory, as well as the inclusion in this concept of some of the «studies of diasporas, black residents of the shores of the Atlantic Ocean, transnational studies, and so on» [3].

For the literature of this period, it is also important to introduce into it the line of personal, psychological and cultural growth of characters, as well as the emergence of feminist trends in literature. Several patterns are noted: colonial assimilation, «violation», or restoration of the author’s identity against the background of cultural traditions, as well as «struggle», where the author is a native resident of the colony, who was previously the object of criticism and is now beginning the struggle for the restoration of freedom, political rights and the response to aggression.

Many works are critical reviews of the authors on what happened during the period of colonization: for example, in the work «Black skin
